3rd through 5th Grade Programs

Third graders in the Spring term of their school year as well as 4th and 5th graders are invited to participate in our Life Then and Now program or Our Town program.

Life Then and Now

This program will teach the students what life was like in the 1920s with three activities. History Detectives allows students to explore actual 1920s artifacts reflecting inventions, communication, travel, work, leisure, and popular culture. In Life Down on the Farm students will tour our farmhouse and compare and contrast their own homes, conveniences, amusements, and chores with life 90 years ago. Our Melting Pot will involve them in what it was like to immigrate to America in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Through a pre-visit activity, they will share their family’s story when they come to Shawnee Town (Pre-activity worksheet).

Our Town

This program will now be featuring, Garret's Grocery Store, one of our newest buildings, along with Bousman Barber Shop and Harmony Schoolhouse. We will be show casing what small town life was like in 1920's America. Students will have an opportunity to fill walk-in orders at Garrett's, create shopping lists, learn about paying on store credit, and how advertising brought greater consumer awareness. At the Barber Shop, they will have an opportunity to pay two bits for a shave and a haircut, shine shoes, see themselves in 1920's hair styles, and learn about the increasing role women began to play in business. Harmony School House will provide countless opportunities to compare and contrast education in the last 90 years.
