School Visits

Shawnee Town 1929 can help meet your curriculum standards and provide an immersive hands-on field trip experience through 1920s Shawnee!

Our two field trip programs are designed provide engaging environments that students will explore with our interpretive museum team, providing an experience that connect kids with our shared history and creates an appetite for lifelong learning. Each program includes an introduction and 4 activity stations with instructors. Teachers will divide students into four groups with chaperones ahead of their visit, and these groups will rotate to each station. Programs typically last around 90 minutes, and groups are welcome to self-guide the remaining areas and enjoy lunch on-site.

Click on the Program Lesson Plans for specifics on how we meet your Kansas and Missouri Curriculum Standards, and ways to engage with your students before and after your visit. If you have specific topics or themes you’d like emphasized, please discuss with staff ahead of your visit!

LIFE ON A TRUCK FARM
WORKING IN TOWN

SELF-GUIDED AREAS: Your booked program will feature hands-on activities and teaching in one of our museum areas, the Farmstead or the Town. The remaining area you are allowed to self-guide if you choose, and we recommend it! Teachers can also download our SCAVENGER HUNT ACTIVITY to print and bring on your visit! This is a great way to keep the students focused while walking around, instead of destroying the exhibits! Activities sheets are offered for reading and non-reading age levels.

We also have a new teacher resource on site - a Game Trunk! We know following lunch, the kids often have energy to burn off. Teachers can access this Trunk stocked with different easy 1920s-era lawn games to enjoy with the students and chaperones! This is completely self-directed by teachers, and students may not access the trunk.

BONUS: Pair your field trip with one of our free Traveling Trunks as a pre-visit interactive with lessons and artifacts that puts students in touch (literally) with history! We notice a marked increase on engagement and retention with students who enjoyed these interactive lessons ahead of their visit. Click the Traveling Trunk page to learn more.

SCHEDULE:
Field Trip programs are available Tuesdays through Fridays from March to Mid-May and September to October. Groups are also able to schedule a standard guided tour during our general operating hours March-October Tuesday through Saturday 10:00am - 4:30pm. Group reservation to guarantee tour guides.

MUSEUM MANNERS:
Please prepare your students AND parents to practice good museum manners! Students MUST BE SUPERVISED by chaperones and teachers while self-guiding the museum. We all know post-COVID, kids are bouncing off the walls, and we find many students have no awareness of behavior in public spaces. You can help us teach them! We are a small staff and do not have the ability to supervise all 18 exhibit buildings.

The museum staff will go over the rules at the beginning of your field trip and help remind groups, however teachers that feel they cannot keep control of the students with the chaperones they have are advised to skip this opportunity. Schools are responsible for any damage to the exhibits.

LUNCH:
There are outdoor picnic tables, benches, and a bandstand where your students may have lunch. We do not have an indoor facility. Teachers can store lunches in the Bandstand during the program. A water fountain with bottle filling is available by the lunch area. There are no snacks available for purchase. Groups must clean up all their trash, and food must remain outside. Students must be supervised at all times.

WEATHER:
Shawnee Town 1929 is an outdoor museum with minimal provisions for inclement weather. We encourage students, teachers and parents to dress accordingly. Field trips are held Rain-or-Shine, barring dangerous weather conditions. Otherwise, it is the School’s decision to cancel. Rescheduling is offered when available, but the spring schedule is usually full.

ACCESIBILITY:
All field trip areas are ADA accessible. If you have specific student concerns, please discuss with the staff ahead of your field trip to ensure accommodations.
